I cannot thank you enough for writing this. I’m only now commenting because I’ve been struggling with the right words to say, but I think you know I have two adult autistic sons. It’s hard to not write about my life precisely for the reasons why you mention: our kids are at the mercy of our decisions. I don’t take this lightly. I don’t ever want anyone, especially my family, to feel exploited by my writing. On the other hand, the world is then blind to real issues that need to be addressed, issue of human dignity — of community members who are often invisible. I’ve never found the balance of writing about my life. I think I write poetry like how you write about crime and baseball.
Thank you for sharing this. I agree, it’s such a tough line to walk. I know from you sharing about your family how much you love them. And I wanna add that it’s not easy being a caretaker, but what shines through when I do catch glimpses of your world is how much your family means to you. We got this! As long as we’re there for our family, they will be okay. Thank you again, Zina, and I hope you stay strong amidst the rhetoric these days.
A key post with much that needed to be said. Finally able to access it by going to your main page.
Thank you! And also, I appreciate you reading my work!
